How did the idea of manifest destiny eventually lead to division within the union

The idea of Manifest Destiny meant that the US was "destined" to eventually expand to the Pacific, meaning that it would have to create many new states. These new states each head to decide whether to be slave or free, which led to disputes that couldn't be solved without the Civil War.
