Moctezuma II was the Tlatoani or ruler of the Aztec Empire (1502-1520) during the initial conquest war led by Hernán Cortés. In a treasonous move, Cortés, after being welcomed by Moctezuma II, imprisoned and tortured him to take over Tenochtitlan. Even though this first conquering attempt was unsuccessful, Cortés and his men had to flee the city to avoid getting killed but Moctezuma was killed after his treasonous imprisonment. Later, Cortés would return and take over the city and the Empire.
