How did the french colony of saint-domingue transform into the first black republic in modern history

The French colony of Saint-Domingue transformed because slaves inspired by the French Revolution. Toussaint L'Ouverture led a revolt with gathering rebels and succeeded in taking over the colony from the French by driving out the Whites and French Troops. In 1804, declared its independence as and founded the Republic of Haiti.
