Shifting cultivation is an agriculture system in which a person uses a piece of land, only to abandon or change the initial use some time later.

It is a system where the minority of fields are in cultivation and the majority are in various stages of natural re-growth. Fields are being cultivated for a relatively short time and, once they yield crops, abandoned and allowed to recover ( fallow ) for a relatively long time. The longer a field is cropped, the faster it degrades and loses its soil organic matter, the field becomes acid and porous. The purpose of the shifting is to allow  the field to regain its state before it was cleared, and for the soil to recover the condition it was in  before cropping.
