The post-war period saw a significant change in the culture of New Mexico, including its art. While the visual art of New Mexico used to heavily feature romantic and nostalgic periods, the experience of WWII (specifically the significant role New Mexico played in the development of the atomic bomb) changed the perspective of artists.

Artist shifted their focus to modernism and artistic experimentation. A state that used to be sparsely populated and less developed was now one part of the scientific avant-gard of the country. New Mexican artists both challenged and played with the stereotypes attached to Native Americans in the region, blending traditional art with the hard brushstrokes and straight lines associated with modernist painting.
