B. Encomienda

The Spanish needed people to send over to the Americas in order to claim the land for them. Since it was a risky journey filled with unknowns, they had to provide some incentive. Thus, the encomienda system was born. In return for conquering the land and claiming it for the Spanish, the rulers gave control over the natives to the conquistador.
