Karen has never been married and has a hard time maintaining a relationship with other persons. For example, she has been fired from her last two jobs because she got into arguments with her supervisors. Her parents were divorced when Karen was three and she lived with her grandmother until her grandmother died, when Karen was twenty. Since that time, she has lived alone. Although she desperately wants to have an active life, she spends most of her time alone in her garden. Her garden is beautiful –neat and colorful! She says she feels more comfortable with flowers than people. In her words, "I’ve never been rejected by a flower yet."
