Clay was born a mean and ruthless child. He beats and whips slaves for no reason, and would always be rude to his new mother. Though she was kind, he was not. Clay had friends who were just like him rude and hateful. They liked to go hunting, and teasing the slaves.
On Clay's sixteenth birthday Mr. Derby bought a slave that Clay called Myna, her actual name was Amari. Amari was a smart girl that Clay liked to do things to her after the sun has gone down. Clay would think that the girl actually liked him, but Amari had a powerful hatred for Clay and his room that always smelled of sweat.
Amari was a hard worker and a fast learner. She learned english in two weeks time, though it wasn't very good, it was just enough that she needed. Clay would always have a deep hatred for his new mother. She was a kind woman and did nothing to hurt Clay, but apparently he thought differently.
One day Clay thought it wood be fun to go alligator hunting with his friends but instead of regular cow or chicken meat, they decided to use Tidbit. Amari came with and decided to help Tidbit live. Clay and his friends were laughing and enjoying themselves, while Amari and Tidbit were terrified. Clay caught five alligators, and let Tidbit go.
Clay and their friends returned to their work, while Tidbit and Amari were sobbing in each others arms. Clay was apparently very happy about this. He soon went back home. Clay had dinner, and went to bed. Clay heard the sound of a pistol firing in the house, and the sound of his step mother crying. He ran to see what had happened. Mr. Derby had killed Noah, and the little baby that he found hiding in one of the slaves houses. He was pleased, to see his mother crying, but not the dead bodies.
Clay and the family had dinner in silence. Mrs. Isabel still having tear streaks on the side of her face, sat with her head down, and didn't eat. Clay had an unusual amount of wine like he'd normally have, and went to bed drunk, not being able to wake up in the morning. The next morning when Clay was to assist Amari, Polly, and Tidbit to town with the doctor he couldn't wake up. Polly, Tidbit, and Amari escaped with the help of the doctor and his highway man story. Many men started looking in the north, but Clay knew that they knew better than to go north, so he decided to go south.
In a few weeks, he found them. But they were too smart for him, they had a musket with them, and Polly shot. It grazed the side of his head, they had just enough time to tie him up, and they noticed a rattle snake near him. They just left, and decided to let the snake be. Clay never got the chance to regain full consciousness. The snake bit him right as he was beginning to come back the venom came with full effect. He died within
