November 14, 1789 Dear Diary,
The past few years have been both challenging and exciting. After we drafted the new
Constitution in Philadelphia, we had a struggle on our hands to ratify it. We thought we
had a government with enough
to ensure that no one
branch of the government became too powerful. Yet, not everyone in the country
supports the Constitution, and those who don't were given the unfair name of
. They often live in
areas and
aren't very organized. The majority of the members in the Massachusetts convention
didn't support the new government, but some Federalists got their votes by promising
to add
to the Constitution. Eventually, ten states
ratified the Constitution, and it went into place. What a relief to know that the long,
complicated process of creating a new national government was finally complete!
We then had to go about setting up the new government. I was unanimously elected
president, which was flattering. John Adams was selected as vice president because it
brought
to the executive branch.
With Adams in place, I set about selecting my
, or group
of advisers. I included Thomas Jefferson as secretary of state and Alexander Hamilton
as head of the Treasury Department. And even though I could use time to repose, I
now begin my job as president. Good night!
