World War II began in Europe in 1939. In the years leading up to the war, France and Great Britain had attempted to
avoid full-scale war by allowing Germany to conquer
certain European territories. This policy was known as
appeasement. However, Germany refused to honor its
agreements and continued expanding its borders. When
Germany invaded Poland, Great Britain and France were
forced to declare war. The United States remained neutral
in the conflict until Japan, Germany's ally, attacked Pearl
Harbor in 1941. The war eventually ended after Germany
was completely captured and the United States dropped
two atomic bombs on Japan.
