There is nothing a man can desire from the gods, nothing that the gods can grant to a man, which
Augustus did not bestow upon the Republic, the Roman people, and the world. The civil wars ended
after twenty years, foreign wars were suppressed, peace restored; validity was restored to the laws,
authority to the courts, and dignity to the Senate. The old traditional form of the Republic was
restored. Agriculture was returned to the fields, respect to religion, to mankind freedom from anxiety,
and to each citizen his property rights were now assured; old laws were usefully amended, and new
laws passed for the general good. Augustus was forced to hold the office of consul eleven times in a
row, despite his frequent efforts to refuse. But he stubbornly refused the dictatorship, which the
people persistently offered him. To tell of the wars waged under his command, of the peace of the
world by his victories, of his many works at home and outside of Italy would wear a writer who had
his whole life to devote to the task.

Which statement in the passage best reflects sumer's opinion of the dred scott decision? a."i speak what cannot be denied." b."[the] judgment was sustained by a falsification of history." b."the opinion was more thoroughly abominable than anything history." i speak what cannot be denied when i declare that the opinion of the chief justice in the case of dred scott was more thoroughly abominable than anything of the kind in the history of courts. judicial baseness reached its lowest point on that occasion. you have not forgotten that terrible decision where a most unrighteous judgment was sustained by a falsification of history. -charles sumner, 1865

50 me on july 4, 1776, thomas jefferson wrote the declaration of independence. the declaration of independence can be compared to a break up letter because jefferson explained why america wanted its independence from king george iii. read pages 516-520 in your textbook to discover why america wanted to be an independent country. you will write your own break up letter from the colonies to king george iii. your letter needs to be at least 5-7 sentences, include the issues/events leading up to this breaking point, and why the founding fathers felt independence would be better. remember! this is a “breakup letter”, so channel your inner taylor swift and make it creative!
