What is in the Placard

It is a picture of Cecil Rhodes holding up a cable that seems to connect the Cape Colony in South Africa to the British protectorate of Egypt.

Cause ⇒ Need for Raw Materials, New Markets and Nationalism

Cecil John Rhodes was a British politician and business man who wanted to build a railway that would connect the Port Said in Egypt to Cape Town in the Cape colony of South Africa.

There were several reasons he wanted this:

He wanted the British to have easier access to the raw materials of the African continent. He wanted the British to be able to transport goods easily across the continent which would increase trade and access to new markets. He was a patriotic British man who wanted the British to acquire more influence and territory in Africa.
