Read the excerpt from James Davis' book, Who is Black? One Nation's Definition. The excerpt explains the history of and discusses the concept of the "one drop rule" that impacted Talma Gordon's life. Many biracial people have chosen to identify with only one race. For example, former President Barack Obama checked only African American/Black on his 2010 census, and although Halle Berry is 50% African American and 50% white and her daughter is 75% white, she states that she believes she, as well as her daughter, is African American. What leads people to favor the one-drop rule? Make sure to use evidence from the excerpt to back up your claims and respond to at least two of your peers.
