Part A People might be motivated to move away from their countries of origin for many reasons, known as push factors. Similarly, people are also drawn to a certain country for many other reasons, known as pull factors. In the table below, list a few ideas of what might constitute a push factor for leaving one country and a few ideas of what might be a pull factor drawing someone into a new country.

Part B
The graph below represents responses of individuals from around the world who were asked to name their most desired destination if they were to emigrate. The United States, with its numerous pull factors, maintains a position as the most desirable place to immigrate around the world. Why do you think that is?

Part B
The graph below represents responses of individuals from around the world who were asked to name their most desired destination if they were to emigrate. The United States, with its numerous pull factors, maintains a position as the most desirable place to immigrate around the world. Why do you think that is?

Consider what you’ve learned about the government and economic structure of the United States in this unit and this course, and write three to five sentences explaining your theories about why the United States is a desirable destination for immigrants.

Part C
Immigration policy in the United States has changed many times. During certain periods, the United States has instituted policies that place heavy restrictions on immigration; at other times, immigration policy has been more welcoming. As politicians and other policy makers in the United States evaluate immigration policy, debates continue about the appropriate response to the line of people eager to immigrate. In the table below, list a few ideas about the possible benefits of fewer restrictions to immigration. Then, list the possible challenges that might arise with allowing more immigration.

You may wish to do some research if ideas on both sides don’t immediately come to mind.

Part D
Write a short paragraph explaining how immigration policy could be both a foreign and a domestic policy concern. How does immigration policy interact with economic policy?

Part E
Recently, political leaders have made efforts to reform the US immigration system, igniting fierce debate. Reform can mean opening the immigration system for a freer flow of people, or restricting immigration to smaller numbers, depending on a person’s perspective. Read this argument for making immigration more open and this argument for restricting immigration. In your own words, summarize each side’s argument in two to three sentences.

Part F
Write a 250-word essay explaining your informed opinion about immigration policy and immigration reform. Consider the information you have gathered and brainstormed about throughout this task. Review the arguments supporting and opposing increased immigration. Do some additional research on your own. Then, make a claim in support of one side, explain your reasoning, and support your reasons with evidence and arguments from your resources.

Use the Process section below to help support your research and writing.

Process

Follow the steps below to complete your essay, and use the links provided to assist with your research and writing. When you have finished your essay, use the drop box to submit it to your teacher.

Gather sources. Begin by gathering additional sources to build your argument. Make sure to examine your sources for accuracy. For each source, consider these questions:
Who authored the document?
What is the purpose of the document?
When was the document written?
How will this document help your argument?
Develop your argument. Now that you have analyzed sources to use as evidence, revisit the essay question. Then develop your argument with these factors in mind:
Your argument should be well supported by your research.
Match the evidence in your sources to the points in your argument.
Write your essay. As you write your paper, use quotations from and summaries of your sources to support your argument. Be careful to keep these ideas in mind:
To avoid plagiarism, make sure to cite your sources properly with in-text citations and a works cited page.
When you are finished, reread your essay to check for all of the points above, and then proofread it to be sure your work doesn’t contain errors in grammar or spelling.
