This leaving the union came as a result of Lincolin being elected to the presidency and the South being concerned he would outlaw slavery. When the war started it was more about the South leaving the Union than it was slavery. That changed with the Emanspation Proclmation. Till the battle of Gettysburg and Vicksburg the South had the upper hand. The North winning those battles changed the tide of the war. Sherman marched on Atlanta and burned everything in sight. He gifted Savanah Georgia to the president when he arrived there. The North won the war, reuniting the southern or confederate states to the union
