Read this paragraph from an informative essay on the civil rights movement. One of the most important pieces of legislation from the civil rights movement was the Voting Rights Act. This law was passed by Congress in 1965. It enforced voting rights granted by the 14th and 15th Amendments by providing protections. It made it illegal for states to pass laws that discriminate against voters. It banned certain parts of the country from making changes to voting without getting approval from the federal government first. Most places that were banned were Southern states. The passage of the Voting Rights Act was a major turning point in the fight for civil rights.
