Most had routine jobs to perform every day, and the mission priests introduced them to new ways of life and ideas. The priests supervised all activities in the mission. They would often physically punish uncooperative natives. But, the missions also impacted California Indian cultures in negative ways. Additionally, Spanish missionaries brought diseases with them that killed untold thousands of natives. Prior to the California missions, there were about 300,000 Native Californians.
