Eric Gill was born in 1882 in Brighton, Sussex and in 1897 his family moved to Chichester. Eric studied at Chichester Technical and Art School, and in 1900 moved to London to focus as an architect with the training of W.D. Caroe, specialists in religious architecture. Unsatisfied with his training, he took up night classes in a stone masonry at Westminster Technical Institute and in calligraphy at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where Edward Johnston, inventor of the London Underground typeface, became his teacher in the art of good modern lettering and became a solid inspiration. In the year 1903 he abandoned his architectural training to become a letter-cutter, calligrapher, and monumental mason.
