What was the role of the christian church in medieval society

The Christian church was one of the leading governmental heads that were allowed to make their own laws within a certain boundary, and were allowed to not pay taxes (reason why they are rich). 
Church's also helped people find their faith, however, many catholic church's during the medieval society were fairly corrupted
