What was the main reason that the birth rate in america declined during the great depression? husbands who were laid-off and couldn't find jobs abandoned their wives. couples decided not to have children until they could had more economic stability. wives had to go out to earn a living and were unable to care for a baby. couples under economic strain were contemplating getting a divorce, not starting a family.
