Muhammad Ahmad ibn as Sayyid abd Allah, also known as The Mahdi or Muhammad Ahmed al Mahdi was a Muslim religious leader of the Egyptian Sudan. After gathering enough followers, Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed to be the Mahdi so long awaited by the Muslims. Under their religious authority the clans of Baqqarah united to form an alliance that aimed to establish an Islamic republic as a prelude to a world Islamic state. Muhammad Ahmed declared a jihad, and led his army to a religious war aimed at ending the Ottoman and Egyptian occupation. His main opponent was General Charles George Gordon, whom he defeated and killed in the siege of Khartoum. His troops would get several more victories (Kassala, Sennar ...). Six months after the capture of Khartoum, I would die of typhus.

However, Ahmad's movement would lose much strength after his death and would be limited to the borders of Sudan. During the rule of Lord Salisbury, the British led by Lord Kitchener would carry out an offensive, in revenge for the defeat of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon, which would end with the destruction of the army of the followers of El Mahdi in the battle of Omdurmán in 1898.
