When slaves were Emancipated and were given citizenship rights, they were the ones to get political representation in the southern part of the United States. It was white democrats who had political powers across the south and their goal was to restore the supremacy of whites. But by the time of the election of the president in the year 1876, there were only three state legislatures that were controlled by these white democrats.

As of now, there are a total number of 153 people from African American backgrounds who have served in the Congress of the United States and the majority out of these 153 have been part of House of Representatives. In Senate, 10 African Americans have served and there are for who have served in the Republican Party. The first African American president of the United States came from Democratic party and he was 'Barack Obama' who served as President of United States for two consecutive terms between 2009-2017.
