According to Article II, Section 2 Clause 2 (Appointment Clause) of the United States Constitution, the US President is given authority to nominate and with the "advice and consent" of the United States Senate, appoint certain public officials. Ambassadors,  public Ministers and Consuls, and judges of the Supreme Court are some public officials mentioned in this clause.
