In 1871 Tuekakas died and he was succeeded by his son Hinmatówyalahtqit (Thunder rolling on the mountain), better known as Chief Joseph (1840-1907), who implored President Ulysses S. Grant not to take the valley of Wallowa from them . This prohibited the establishment of the targets on June 16, 1873, but in 1875 the territory of Wallowa was opened to white colonization, and in May 1877 they sent General Howard to move them to the Lapwai Reserve. The prophet of the tribe, Toohoolhoolzote, was arrested and their cattle stolen. In retaliation, they killed 11 settlers and decided to flee to Montana. With 250 warriors, 450 non-combatants and 2,000 horses decided to join Looking Glass in Clearwater and flee to Canada.
