South Carolina and the other states had a constitutional right to secede from the Union to protect their sovereign rights, including the right to own slaves and to transport them into the western territories. Southerners had long claimed that federal tariffs and taxes discriminated against their region. With  the election of the Republican Lincoln, they were convinced that the federal  government would continue to “oppress” them and abridge their “states’ rights.” One of those “rights” was the right to secede from the Union.
