Krushchev’s speech, made to the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, was highly shocking at its day because it was very critical about the government led by his predecessor, Joseph Stalin. In this “secret speech”, as it was known, Krushchev criticized the purges led by Stalin in which millions of people as well as party members were killed. He also pointed that Stalin fostered his leadership as a “cult of personality”. The response at the speech was of complete astonishment between party members who have long revered the figure of Stalin as the greatest leader of the Soviet Union. Moreover, the speech drew criticism from other communist regimes such as China and Albania, which condemned Krushchev as a revisionist and broke off relationship with his government.
