Panama once was part of Colombia. The supporting of separatists in Panama by the US was seen as an early act of American Imperialism.A war between the US and Colombia took place.

Being victorious, the US exerted strategic influence over the region, and set governments favorable to its national interest. As a unilateral colonial interest in the region was imposed the US profited from expanded international trade.

As the independence of Panama to Colombia was sponsored by the US, it was given the right to act in this territory as it was American soil.

In 1914, the Panama Channel finally was able to connect both oceans, and the US acted freely. Having no other powers to compete in the region( The French had in 1880 also previously tried to seize the region. ) It had exploitation colonialism. In that way, they didn't regard the well being of the Caribean and Latin American nations. Most of them were in an early stage of creation as independent states.
