Explain how the united states and the soviet union used nuclear as a form of deterrence

The United States and Russia both had nuclear weapons. These are also known as weapons of mass destruction. There is something called mutually assured destruction. This means that if a war starts both countries will be wiped from existence. This will also effect the rest of the world.
