Why do nations form alliances?

So we don't have to be enemy's and always at war with one another. So we can be the United Nations like the United States Of America (USA.)

So they don't have enemy's and have some nation they can trust to be on our side if a war happens. The downside is that if they get in a war then we are dragged into it as well
