Born between the 6th century and 4th century B.C. in Nepal (Lumbini), Siddartha Gautama was the son of a king who filled himself with questions regarding human nature, and dedicated his own life to achieve an ascetic one to understand the meaning behind human's suffering.  

One day, he defeated Mara the demon, cleansed his mind, and became the Buddha under the Bodhi tree. He spent the rest of his days teaching others the answers that he had obtained with his enlightenment.  

Despite his birth in Nepal, he started his teachings nearby Benares, nowadays Sarnath, India. Centuries later, Buddhism spread to South India and Sri Lanka promoted by Ashoka the Great.
