African American Soldiers :

- were only allowed to join in 1862 (by the emancipation proclamation)

- were often told to do household, non-combat support (cooking, cleaning)

- were paid $10 a month ($3 of which were deducted)

- they had inadequate medical treatment (segregated hospitals)

Both :

- Both were only allowed to lead their own race (black generals led black soldiers, white generals led white soldiers)

- Both tested by the same categories

White Soldiers :

- were always allowed to join

- generally in combat and on frontlines

- were paid $13 a month (no deduction)

- never had to worry about having insufficient things
