Thurgood Marshall and his NAACP legal team focused on the education system in their legal attack on segregation. In the 1940s Heman Sweatt, an African American man, was denied admission to the University of Texas law school because he was black. Texas established a separate African American law school just for Heman Sweatt. The Supreme Court found that the state of Texas was not offering an equal education to Sweatt, and that separate but equal facilities could not be provided in graduate or professional education. As a result, graduate and professional schools were forced to integrate. The Sweatt v. Painter case of 1950 was an early NAACP victory. What was the basis for the NAACP lawsuit in Sweatt v. Painter? Sweatt had been denied the opportunity to become a lawyer. Sweatt had been unfairly denied admission to the University of Texas law school. The state of Texas had not created law schools for African Americans. The law school had unfair admission standards for African American students.
