Even though it was just play acting, prisoners and guards in the experiment took their new ascribed statuses to heart. Prisoners became submissive and guards became dominant and sadistic. Remember that guards and prisoners were selected at random. Do you think dividing students into statuses of "gifted", "honors", "AP", etc. at such an early age might have similar effects on the behavior of students? In other words if a student is labeled as "high" or "low" achieving do you think it could have an effect on the student's future behavior?
