The United States was well aware of the Armenian genocide which saw the ruling authority in the Ottoman empire attempt to ethnically cleanse the Armenians.

An estimated 1 million Armenians were killed in this genocide and the even though the U.S. did not send military aid as Europe was at war during that time, NGOs like the Committee on Armenian Atrocities managed to get frequent donations to send to the Armenians for food and other important needs.

The New York Times gave the genocide a wide coverage and was credited with bringing much needed attention to the activity as they ran more than 145 articles on the genocide in the year 1915 alone.
