“Never Shall I Forget That Night….”

Assignment: “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in the camp, which turned my life into one long night…” These are the words of Elie Wiesel describing his experience as a 14-year old that lived through and survived the Holocaust.

Businessman Oskar Schindler arrives in Krakow in 1939, ready to make his fortune from World War II, which has just started. After joining the Nazi party primarily for political expediency, he staffs his factory with Jewish workers for similarly pragmatic reasons. When the SS begins exterminating Jews in the Krakow ghetto, Schindler arranges to have his workers protected to keep his factory in operation, but soon realizes that in so doing, he is also saving innocent lives.

As we study the Holocaust, we will be reading the book Night written by Elie Wiesel. As you read the novel think about why Night is an effective source in teaching the Holocaust. Indicate the aspects of the book that had the greatest effect on you and why every student learning about the Holocaust should read the book Night and view the movie Schindler’s List.
