Glorieta Pass was a strategic location, situated at the southern tip of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. On March 1862, a Confederate force of 200-300 Texans under the command of Major Charles L. Pyron were camped at Johnson’s Ranch, at one end of the pass. Union forces of more than 400 men were led by Major John M. Chivington. Through charging, retreating, capturing, attack and counter attack Chivington’s men destroyed all supplies and animals at Johnson’s Ranch, forcing a Confederate retreat to Santa Fe. The Confederate forces were stopped in the Southwest. Glorieta Pass was the turning point of the war in the New Mexico Territory.
