and Republicans from gaining political power in the South. The organization began in
1867 in Tennessee. Established as a social club for Confederate veterans, it became a
violent, political group who tortured and killed blacks and white supporters of the
Republican party to stop them from voting and running for office during the
Reconstruction Era. They also tormented black organizations such as the Freedmen's
Bureau to maintain social control.
