In he aftermath of the revolution, the Reign of Terror took place. At that time  anyone who was suspected of being against the Revolution was condemned to death. After its leader Robespierre was executed, a new government called the Directory was established and it was later replaced when Napoleon came to power.  Later on he turnt into emperor and fought with other European countries until he was defeated and sent to exile in St. Helena. The monarchy was restored briefly and then France adopted a democracy again.
