After a period of growing international tension due to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28. Quickly Russia, Belgium, Great Britain, France, and Serbia lined up against Austria-Hungary and Germany, setting the beginning of World War I.

The very first battle of the Great War was on August 4, 1914, when German troops crossed the border into Belgium.
