The art of the Renaissance is more realistic than the art of the Middle Ages. Why is this?

For example, the human body was painted in a realistic manner, often with backdrops of nature. There was lesser emphasis placed on religious art and vanished were the images that had people positioned freely and in came proportioned groupings.
