When Teddy Roosevelt called for volunteers for the Rough Riders, George Curry was a sheriff in New Mexico and joined the group. Curry had a reputation as an independent thinker and a good, honest man. Curry seized the train on his way to ship out for battle. His actions showed Teddy Roosevelt that he was a man who would do the right thing regardless of consequences. They remained very good friends for 20 years.
