Explain how the efforts to combat the Great Depression led to an expanded role for the federal government

During the Depression, the federal government was significantly enlarged, making tremendous strides to support local governments and their residents through the new agreements, social security, FDIL, etc. Alternatively, promote private charities and local and state governments to coordinate and provide relief from poverty.
