Around the fifth century AD, parts of Western Africa were becoming overcrowded, so people needed to move in search of other lands where there will be enough resources to support them. As of the beginning of the sixth century, mass migrations started out of West Africa, moving southward and eastward. The people that were migrating were Bantu, thus the name of this roughly five-century long migration is called the Bantu Migration.

The Bantu took two different roots initially, one being southward, along the Atlantic coastline, while the other being eastward toward the big lakes in Eastern Africa. The eastern branch then split up, with some of the people moving deeper into the interior of the continent, while some continued southward along the Indian Ocean coastline. The numbers of migrants were so high, and they were so successful in overtaking territories, that the Bantu quickly became the largest group of people in sub-Saharan Africa by far.
