Between 1790 B.C. and 1750 B.C., Hammurabi became king of a city-state called Babylon. He soon conquered most of Mesopotamia and made a large empire that became known as the Babylonian Empire. Hammurabi made his own laws (The Code of Hammurabi) to cover all matters that were in city life. There were 282 laws that covered family relationships, taxes, land and business deals, trade, loans, debts, wages, and crime. Hammurabi was the one who founded the "eye for an eye" and a "tooth for a tooth" in his laws, meaning if a robber cut off someone's hand while escaping, they would their hand cut off too.
