Well yes because Manifest Destiny claimed that it was the objective of the United States to absorb all of North America. The land is associated with wealth, political power, and independence. Anglos believed that they are bringing civilization, democracy, and technology to the west. Which they had the authority to do so and this included the forced removal of Native Americans and the rapid expansion of the United States intensified the issue of slavery as new states were added to the Union, leading to the outbreak of the Civil War.

i confess that there are several parts of this constitution which i do not at present approve, but i am not sure i shall never approve them: for having lived long, i have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which i once thought right, but found to be otherwise. it is therefore that the older i grow, the more apt i am to doubt my own judgment, and to pay more respect to the judgment of others.
