Why did sharecropping develop as a replacement for slavery in the South after the passage of the 13th amendment during Reconstruction? It was used as a labor program to get freed slaves working after the war.

White southern society wanted to force freed slaves back into agricultural work and keep them financially dependent on white landowners.

There was little land available for farming in the South after the Civil War.

Freed slaves refused to leave the land they knew
