It made things hard for him. He had decided to keep a cool head and avoid war with france. He also did the same with Britain by signing the Jay treaty. This helped our realtions with britain but worsened them with france. They saw this as us allying ourselves with britain. Napoleon Bonaparte had decided to sell all the land in america because he didnt want another war with us and also heard how an army of us troops were  approaching new orleans. So he sold it to us and we made friends with them end of story.
