Evidence of monotheism is found in the mid-1300s BCE, during the reign of Akhenaten. Akhenaten worshipped a single god, Aten, represented by the sun disk. Originally named Amenhotep IV, he changed his name to Akhenaten, meaning "pleasing to Aten. His rejection of the old religion caused a great deal of turmoil among his people, and his changes did not last long.
