Please Help! Why did same sex marriage emerge as a civil rights issue? Why did some people decide to be gay/lesbian instead of being straight?

Same sex marriage went against the bible. That is how some thought then and an outrage came about. Also people don't choose to be gay, lesbian bi, etc.
