Native Americans is a traditional name that unites the indigenous peoples of America and the people descended from them. Ethnologically, there is no factor that unites all Native American populations: there were great differences in the Native Americans ’original languages, cultures, social systems, livelihoods, and religions. Before the advent of Europeans, the American continent had both centrally controlled empires and small communities of nomadic hunter-gatherers.  

The arrival of Europeans on the American continent proved devastating to the Natives. Initially, trade-based relations became hostile and Europeans militarily subjugated many Native American societies. The biggest catastrophe was caused by the disease epidemics that accompanied the Europeans, against which the Natives had no resistance. Many Native American peoples and tribes were completely extinct, and the lives of many Native Americans throughout America are still marked by exclusion and poverty.
